1/3. encephalomyelitis disseminata: a rare, but challenging differential diagnosis of anorectic disorder.

The frequent occurrence of psychiatric syndromes in encephalomyelitis disseminata is known to obscure its diagnosis. We here report on the case of a 19-year-old female patient presenting symptoms of anorexia nervosa and subsequently diagnosed as suffering from encephalomyelitis disseminata. High dose corticoid treatment resulted in a nearly complete remission of the neurological symptoms as well as the normalization of her eating behaviour. Our case report underscores the importance of considering 'organic' aetiology in patients with symptoms of distinct eating disorders. The clinical course confirms recent findings, suggesting that acute inflammation in encephalomyelitis disseminata may induce behavioural symptoms, which precede the onset of neurological signs. To our knowledge, only one previous case has been reported to date.

2/3. Severe nutritional iron deficiency and behaviour disorder in an infant.

The case report describes a 9-month-old Indian child with severe iron deficiency and a haemoglobin of 3.1 g/dl (3.1 g per cent). The case illustrates certain behavioural problems (Pollitt & Leibel, 1976)- irritability, anorexia and vomiting - of infants with iron deficiency, which make them more iron-deficient and anaemic. blood transfusion was used to break this vicious circle. The child was given oral iron supplements, her behaviour improved and the anaemia disappeared.

3/3. family pathology and anorexia in the Indian context.

Frequent associations have been found between family interaction and anorectic behaviour. family theorists have viewed anorexia as a manifestation of a dysfunctional family system. We report three families of cases of anorexia (one male and two female) where the symptom was a reflection of family pathology and was being maintained by it. The cases emphasize the need to assess families of anorectics in detail and view them in the cultural context of eating.
